Second Day of Discussion

 Thursday, 11/17/2022

Today we had breakfast at 0730 and then we made our way via metro to Nagoyako.  We were meet out front by Masanori Kurita and taken to his office for a brief discussion about logistics and finances.  We were then taken to Masanori Mori to see the turtles.  Please see the videos below for some idea about the size of the turtles.

After looking at the 2 cohorts of juvenile loggerheads, we can safely and confidently say that they are being well cared for, growing fast and will most assuredly be ready for tagging in March/April/May.

The clip above shows the rearing tanks that Masanori Mori is using to raise the 29 turtles for the STRETCH project.

Feeding time for the juvenile loggerheads.  They all look very healthy and well feed.

Feeding time in tank 2 with 15 turtles in it.

After viewing the first cohort, we went over to the Chelonia Institute to take a look at the second cohort ...30 loggerheads.  Masanori Mori showed us the area as he is the director of the sea turtle division and will travel on the MOL ship to deploy the turtles in April/May.

In this clip we are taking a look at how the Wildlife computer tag Spot6 version 487 fits on the dorsal carapace of the juvenile loggerheads.

A look at the second cohort turtles... walk by and they expect to be feed!!!

Larry and George conduct an interview with a couple of Japanese and Nagoya newspapers.

Here we demonstrate the placement of the tag on the turtles for the newspaper journalists.

Explaining how the on/off conductivity switches work on the Spot 6 tags.

The STRETCH team poses for a quick shot... L to R .. Masanori Kurita, George Balazs, Tomomi Saito, Marc Rice, Larry Crowder and (in front) Masanori Mori.

Tonight we took Kurita san, Mori san and Saito san out to dinner at a very well know chicken wings place.  We had a great time and enjoyed some real Japanese food and camaraderie at a place were we were the only three non-Japanese in the house!
Good fun,,,,
Lots of chicken wings, miso beef intestines, omelet,  cucumbers, meat sticks, spicy green onions, etc.  Beer and Sake, of course.

Sekai No Yamachan Sasashima - chicken wings restaurant.
